The Basics
Founded in 2014 in Valencia, California, by Sheri Smith, who is in recovery and lives on the premises, Just Us Girls is a high end sober living house for women. While many of the clients attend 12-step meetings, Smith is open to the residents participating in SMART Recovery or other recovery support groups of their choice. Smith’s belief is that recovery protocols shouldn’t be forced on a person, and by providing a serene sanctuary her clients are able to find a practice that best works for them.
Accommodations and Amenities
The spacious two-story Mediterranean style house with four bedrooms and four bathrooms located in a quiet residential neighborhood. Just Us Girls accommodates no more than 13 women at a time. There is one spacious private room, two doubles and two quadruple-occupancy rooms. Furnishings include dark wood twin or bunk beds, matching dressers comforters and decorator pillows. The house features a fully equipped kitchen with a large counter and breakfast bar. At Just Us Girls, a cook makes meals. Dinner entrees include pork chops and grilled chicken. Most food is provided and includes coffee, bread, lunch meats, fruit and veggies. Additionally, clients are assigned refrigerator and pantry space.
Rules and Regulations
Smith, who has many years of experience as a sober living manager, accepts clients on a case-by-case basis, but they must be clean and sober and not in need of detox. Additionally, she works closely with clients and helps them figure out an appropriate recovery protocol. She provides referrals to many local outpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment centers, if needed. Length of stay depends on a client’s needs, but there are several clients who have lived there for over a year.
Requirements include attending a minimum of five weekly recovery support meetings, including AA/NA, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery, being at all house meetings and participating in morning meditation. Typically, unemployed clients attend more than five meetings, but there are also AA/NA meetings offered on the premises. Some clients attend outpatient care, while others work or go to school. The curfew is 11 pm seven days a week. Drug and alcohol screenings are conducted on a regular basis, and the house operates on a strict zero tolerance policy.
Extras
On a case-by-case basis, Smith provides sponsorship for women in the house. The community features an outdoor swimming pool, a park with a large pond, a gazebo and winding paths replete with rose bushes. Other amenities include access to the community gym, full playground, basketball court, Jacuzzi and volleyball court.
In Summary
Just Us Girls is a great place for women who are new to recovery and who need a place where the camaraderie is strong. While it is a bit pricey, Just Us Girls is a beautiful home in a neighborhood with tons of extra comforts. As an added bonus, Smith offers support while allowing her clients opportunities to find their own path, whether it is through AA or other recovery support groups.
