Miami Gardens FloridaThe Basics

The Jackson Community Mental Health Center was founded in 2003 with two locations in Miami-Dade County. The Miami-Gardens facility acts as the administrative facility and provides outpatient services for adolescents and youth. The second branch in Opa Locka provides adult outpatient and a crisis stabilization unit with detox services. JCMHS is an accredited Joint Commission providing community-based services tailored to meet the needs of both adolescents and adults.

Treatment and Staff

Between the two facilities, JCMHC serves approximately 3,000 children, adolescents and adult clients each year. Both facilities provide substance abuse treatment as well as mental health care for individuals with co-occurring disorders.

Prior to enrollment, all clients must first schedule an appointment at the Miami-Gardens location for a full bio-psycho-social assessment with treatment coordinators. Depending on age and any needs for detox or special care, the client is enrolled in the appropriate treatment track and a fully individualized treatment program is developed with a case manager. Clients requiring detox live at the Opa Locka facility and receive Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) under the supervision of a medical staff. Suboxone, Methadone or Vivitrol may be prescribed if recommended by the doctor on staff.

Once a client has completed any preliminary steps, they begin attending outpatient treatment. On average, clients attend for 30 days though some remain longer. Clients in need of dual diagnosis support receive medication management services with staff psychiatrists who specialize in the treatment of youth and adolescents with co-occurring disorders. Additional services, including employment assistance and housing options are provided through case managers.

Throughout the course of treatment, clients attend both group and individual therapy. Groups are facilitated daily and address behavioral, emotional, relationship and psychiatric issues. Group topics may include dealing with additional disorders, PTSD, sexually transmitted diseases and relapse prevention. Clients may attend groups one to three times per week depending on their treatment plan and individual sessions may be scheduled as often as bi-monthly to once per week. All tracks use evidence-based treatment practices.

Adolescent tracks are tailored to accommodate school schedules and the particular needs of each family. Services may be accessed at the facilities, in the home or at school. Counselors focus on anger management, ADD, Autism, trauma and other behavioral issues that potentially contribute or lead to substance abuse.

Additionally, JCMHC has a model for treatment called “Families and Communities Empowered for Service” (FACES) that is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Motivational Interviewing (MI) is employed to help clients develop a willingness to recover. The family is highly involved in the recovery process and clients are regularly drug tested.

All clients are treated and guided by a staff of certified mental health professionals. Credentials include Psychiatrists, LCSWs, CADCs and LPCs. Counselors and staff may recommend 12-step meetings if additional peer support is needed.

Extras

The Beyond Empowerment program is an expansion program to FACES that helps support young people in recovery. Clients are given continuous care and guidance for relationships, careers and educational advice. Clients can also attend recreational activities to develop trust and build bonds with their peers in the program.

JCMHC also offers specialized family programs for those in need. Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) is a program for case management and mental health services. Clients must display the need for financial and special help. Counselors work with clients and their families to stabilize the family unit after traumatic experiences or long-term difficulties.
