The Basics
The Inter-Tribal Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Center has been providing no- and low-cost outpatient substance abuse services for members of the Tribes of Northeast Oklahoma and the Miami, Oklahoma community since 1973. Miami, a small city in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, is the Peoria Tribe’s headquarters.
Treatment methods combine traditional therapy and the 12 steps.
Treatment and Staff
After a phone intake session, clients are invited to attend weekly substance abuse group therapy led by a CADC. Additionally, clients work with their counselor to create an individualized schedule for individual therapy sessions. Group sessions explore coping skills, relapse prevention and family dynamics. Groups are intimate, seldom having more than six participants.
Inter-Tribal strongly suggests clients attend 12-step meetings such as AA/NA while in treatment. While there are not any meetings on-site, staff can provide clients with a list of nearby community meetings. Inter-tribal is unable to offer dual diagnosis support, but can refer clients with co-occurring disorders to area mental health facilities.
The duration of outpatient treatment is progress-based and each client works with their counselor to determine the steps necessary for aftercare and building an on-going network of sober support.
Extras
Inter-Tribal provides substance abuse prevention education in local schools and offers DUI assessments and urine tests. The Peoria facility also provides medical services including maternity care, nursing services and preventative screenings.

With a flexible individual therapy schedule and group support tailored to work with each individual’s schedule, it is able to offer culturally sensitive treatment for Native Americans and the community at large.
