Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery Outpatient Review
The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery began in 1979 when the board of trustees of Peoria’s Proctor Hospital trained staff at Minnesota’s Hazelden Clinic to treat its clients with substance use disorders. The Institute offers both residential and outpatient treatment. Outpatient services are located at the Springfield, Peoria and Harvey, Illinois locations. In addition to substance abuse, the Institute also treats behavioral addictions such as gambling, sex, shopping and video game-playing.
Treatment and Staff
The Institute offers two treatment tracks for outpatient clients. In the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), clients attend group therapy three times each week and have individual therapy once a week. The average stay in the IOP is six weeks. The standard outpatient track is 28 weeks and requires group therapy once or twice a week and individual therapy as-needed. Clients in the IOP can step down to standard outpatient once they’re stabilized in sobriety.
Therapy groups usually have fewer than 15 participants and use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors, including MSWs and CADCs.
While The Institute’s inpatient programs can treat clients with co-occurring disorders, its outpatient programs do not. Clients needing dual diagnosis support are referred to nearby mental health clinics for additional therapy and medication.
The Institute believes in the effectiveness of the 12-step framework and requires clients to attend AA/NA meetings each week, the frequency of which depends on their treatment plan.
Extras
The Institute offers a family therapy group each week for clients’ loved ones. It also publishes a quarterly magazine, Paradigm, that addressed addiction issues.
