The Basics
Since 1971, Hunterdon Prevention Resources (previously National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, Inc. of Hunterdon County) has provided outpatient treatment for substance abuse. As a member of New Jersey Prevention Network, a loose affiliation of organizations that provide prevention and education services statewide, Hunterdon Prevention Resources also offers an array of other community-based services.
Treatment and Staff
Though geared more towards early intervention and education, HPR does provide basic outpatient counseling for drug abuse. Scheduling is flexible and treatment plans are individualized; however, all treatment tracks are some combination of individual, group and family therapy and are largely based in CBT with an emphasis on the 12 steps. Dual diagnosis support and relapse prevention sessions are also offered.
Staff consists of LPCs, LCADCs and Master’s-level counselors as well as a number of administrative personnel.
Extras
HPR also offers Actions through Cognitive Training (ACT), a 26-week, court-mandated program designed for clients facing domestic violence charges. Treatment is based in CBT and the Duluth Model. A separate six-week anger management course is also available.
Substance abuse evaluations, employee assistance programs, tobacco cessation programs and interventions are other services offered by HPR. For at-risk adolescents, diversion and early prevention courses are available, as is counseling for gambling addiction.
The organization also hosts a confidential call-line for heroin and prescription drug addiction, designed to help those in need obtain anonymous an immediate help.

In all, Hunterdon Prevention Resources is a valuable resource for those with behavioral health issues within the community. Though the outpatient substance abuse program is somewhat basic, it combines traditional therapy, 12-step principles and evidence-based practices, making it compatible with other outpatient programs of its kind. With flexible scheduling and individualized treatment plans, clients are sure to feel accountable and cared for, laying a solid foundation for long term sobriety.
