House of Serenity Review
Founded in 2014 in Los Osos, California, by Julianna and Mindy Bachitt, who are both in recovery, House of Serenity provides safe and structured sober living for women. Julianna Bachitt, who is a CDAC is also the clinical services director of The Haven at Pismo, a drug rehab that recently opened on California’s central coast in Arroyo Grande, California. The house is currently undergoing a change in ownership.
Accommodations and Amenities
House of Serenity is a ranch-style house surrounded by a white picket fence that has a pristine lawn, potted flowers and a narrow walkway. The home accommodates nine women, who are paired in double-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds with storage cubbies and dressers. The house has a massive living room, which includes black leather couches, lamps, a pool table and a ceiling fan. The living room has glass doors leading out to a private backyard.
At House of Serenity, basic food items, including dairy, fresh fruits and vegetables are provided. Meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen. Often residents cook with each other, and on Sunday nights, a family-style dinner is prepared. Amenities include sheets, towels, cable TV and Wi-Fi. Rap music is prohibited, with the belief that it is disrespectful to women. A house manager lives on the premises.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients must have undergone detox, and complete an application, followed by a comprehensive interview with the house manager. Upon arrival, clients must attend 90 12-step meetings in 90 days. A house van is used to transport clients to and from meetings. Requirements include having a job, attending outpatient treatment, going to school or performing community service. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. Residents who relapse must leave the premises to ensure the safety of the entire household. The curfew is ten pm seven days a week.
Extras
House of Serenity hosts a Monday night Big Book study, as well as a Friday night NA meeting. Other services besides housing include case management, guided morning meditation, outpatient referrals, and recovery coaching. House of Serenity relies on volunteers to help clients reintegrate back into society.
In Summary
Although House of Serenity is undergoing a change of ownership, and will be renamed Restorative Partners in the near future, the services and regulations will effectively remain the same. This sober living home is an oasis for many newly clean and sober women, some of whom are victims of domestic violence. House of Serenity really cares about their clients’ well being, and believes that offering women a serene atmosphere is conducive to their recovery.
