The Basics

After losing a close family member to addiction in 2007, Devana Came was inspired to help clients in recovery. By opening The House of Courage in Riverside, California in 2014, she saw her dream come true and hopes to open another sober living home in the near future. The House of Courage offers male clients in recovery a safe and secure environment.

Accommodations and Amenities

The House of Courage has a nine-bed capacity. The modern-style interior has grey walls, white doors and black trim. Clients share rooms with full sized beds, silver ceiling fans, bedside tables and tile floors. The living room and kitchen are also modern in decor.

Amenities include a pool table, weight room, recreation room, Wi-Fi, Direct TV, Netflix, unlimited domestic phone calls, free coffee, free washer and dryer, large barbeque, house computer and an outdoor table with seating area. Each client also receives the use of a digital safe for storing personal valuables. The House of Courage has a live-in house manager.

The men are responsible for the purchase of their own groceries and prepare their meals. Typically, clients qualify for food stamps that help towards the cost of groceries.

Rules and Regulations

While seven days of abstinence is permissible for admission, The House of Courage prefers that clients have successfully graduated from an inpatient drug rehab. Weekly requirements include attending 12-step meetings, being at the mandatory Sunday house meeting and performing household chores. Working clients are allowed to attend three AA/NA/CA meetings, while unemployed men must go to a minimum of five. Attendance cards must be signed by the meeting’s secretary and presented to the house manager at the Sunday house outing.

Clients undergo random drug and alcohol testing. The House of Courage immediately drug tests a client who is suspected to be under the influence and evicts those who test positive. There is no limit for the length of stay, clients who abide by the rules are allowed to stay indefinitely.

Extras

At The House of Courage, clients are provided with bicycles to aid them with transportation. The House of Courage is a member in good standing with the Riverside Sober Living Coalition, which oversees sober living properties to ensure they are safe and clean.

In Summary

The House of Courage provides men a calm and safe sober environment at an affordable cost. While this may not be a good choice for those who aren’t planning o incorporate 12-step meetings into their recovery, it has many attractive features. Besides lodging, the house offers great amenities like a weight room and pool table and is close to many local businesses and 12-step meetings.
