Helping Kids to Recover Review
Helping Kids to Recover in Carson, a Los Angeles suburb, is an outpatient treatment program for young men and women ages 12 to 20. This nonprofit facility offers substance abuse treatment and education.
Treatment and Staff
At the intake meeting, prospective clients meet with a counselor to discuss individual needs and family concerns. A tour of the facility follows the initial meeting and, if the program seems to be a good fit, a counselor is assigned and an individualized group and individual therapy schedule is developed. Participation in the programs is 100% voluntary and goes at the pace the client desires.
The facility focuses on behavior modification, offering outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) that meet once or twice weekly for an hour and a half at a time. Group topics cover the dangers and consequences of using drugs and alcohol, anger management skills, relationship and life skills, self-esteem and STD education. Meeting schedules vary as well as size of groups, and sessions are available five days a week.
The perinatal IOP program is for young pregnant women and meets two or three times a week. In addition to substance abuse treatment and education, this program offers group and one-on-one sessions that cover family planning and parenting skills.
Staff at the facility are CADCs, doctors, CSWs, and mentors. Some staff members are former addicts who are now certified counselors, giving them a unique perspective.
Extras
Weekly activities such as trips to amusement parks and group outings are scheduled during summer hours for clients. A computer lab is available on site where clients can either do homework or surf the Internet. Cell phones are permitted at the facility, though not during group or individual therapy sessions. A family program is available every Wednesday evening and attendance is encouraged.
