Helping Associates, Inc. Review
Helping Associates, Inc. (HAI) was founded in 1982 by Doctor Joan McGillicuddy and Doctor Antonia Estrada, PhDs in Counseling Psychology. Since then, it’s grown to a four-location behavioral health network with offices in Yuma and Casa Grande, in central Arizona. HAI offers substance abuse treatment in the form of an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and also offers treatment for eating disorders and sex offenses. HAI has a variety of parenting and adolescent support groups along with individual counseling services.
Treatment and Staff
Clients admitted to the IOP commit to attending group and individual therapy each week for four months. Group therapy is three nights a week, and each client has individual therapy once a week. As clients progress, they may attend individual therapy less frequently.
Treatment at HAI uses the Matrix Model for criminal justice settings, which addresses criminal thinking and anger management. Groups are led by addiction counselors with BHT, LSAC and LISAC credentials. Clients with co-occurring disorders can receive dual diagnosis support from the behavioral health team at HAI, which includes psychiatric nurse practitioners and LPCs.
HAI is a strong supporter of the 12-step framework and highly recommends clients attend AA/NA or other peer-support meetings while in treatment. HAI hosts an AA meeting every Thursday night.
Extras
Families of substance abuse clients can attend a 12-week family therapy group for support and education. For aftercare, clients usually make an individual therapy schedule of once weekly to once monthly to check-in with their primary counselor. HAI is currently developing a relapse prevention group for its alumni.

For over 30 years, Helping Associates, Inc. has been providing the residents of central Arizona with IOP treatment for substance abuse along with other programs for process addictions. Its four-month IOP addressing criminal thinking and anger management may be an especially effective choice for those whose substance abuse has contributed to aggressive and/or unlawful behavior.
