The Basics

Founded in 1975, The Help Group is an expansive non-profit based out of Sherman Oaks in Los Angeles, California. The organization provides a staggering range of affordable services for children, adolescents and young adults struggling with autism, learning disabilities, ADHD, abuse and other behavioral health issues. While its list of services is exhaustive and includes residential treatment, many of its offerings are outpatient-based.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs and place them in a program. Because the programs are focused primarily on behavioral health issues rather than addiction, on-site detox services are not available; referrals are provided upon request.

Though a number of specialized treatment tracks are available, general outpatient services are provided for adolescents and young adults. These plans are composed of both individual and group therapy with a range of evidence-based practices including trauma-focused CBT, Seeking Safety, Managing and Adapting Practices (MAP) and teachings from the Positive Parenting Program (PPP). The Help Group employs a very diverse staff and as such, services are provided in English, Spanish, Farsi, Armenian, Hebrew, Arabic and Russian. Program lengths and intensities are flexible and vary on a case-by-case basis. Dual diagnosis support including medication management is available as well. Though 12-step participation is not always required, it may be encouraged.

The staff at the Help Group consists of case managers, psychologists, psychiatrists, LMHCs, LCSWs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

Extras

Other specific programs include outpatient mental health services for adults, school-based mental health counseling, early prevention and intervention services, services for clients with special needs, life skills coaching and much more. A full list of services is available on the organization’s website.

In Summary

In all, The Help Group is a great resource for low-income families and individuals struggling with mental illness, co-occurring disorders and other behavioral issues. The staff is multicultural and wide-ranging and provides clients professional, psychiatric oversight. Treatment includes evidence-based practices as well as case management to help clients and families get back on their feet. For those in the area, The Help Group is a one-stop-shop for affordable behavioral healthcare.
