Healthy Futures Review
Healthy Futures is an outpatient treatment facility located in Scottsdale, Arizona that focuses on various eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Programming includes an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and an emotional eating outpatient track, as well as a number of evidence-based treatment approaches. Healthy Futures was established in 2002 by Mia Elwood, who had also dealt with eating disorders throughout her life, to offer a supportive place to receive comprehensive treatment services within a comfortable and caring setting.
Treatment and Staff
Clients who are participating in treatment at Healthy Futures experience both eating disorder care and mental health programming. At the intake session clients are assessed for what level of care they would need. In the case that an inpatient program is needed prior to admission, the staff is able to recommend those programs and encourage them to return after stabilization. For both the eating disorder and binge eating tracks there are IOPs that require two to four days a week of treatment for up to four hours per day. These programs are offered to both adults and adolescents and have treatment hours in the day and evening.
Programming includes both individual and group therapy, an educational element, meal planning and skills training utilizing DBT. Once clients are where they want to be goals wise in the IOP they are able to step down to the less intensive outpatient programs, which generally run once or twice a week with a therapist along with a possible weekly group therapy sessions if needed. There is an emphasis on clients learning new coping skills instead of turning to their eating disorder as a crutch. Additionally clients learn how to open up to each other as they move through their programs.
Mental health care offers evidence-based approaches like CBT and Somatic Experiencing, and also addresses past traumas or abuse, depression and anxiety. The staff comes from all different experiences and backgrounds to offer a broad view of approaches. There are dieticians, exercise therapists, psychologists, LCSWs and LPCs. There are also therapy animals on site most days.
Extras
There are family counseling services in both a group and individual setting, along with family educational classes about what eating disorders are and how to cope when a family member is experiencing it.
In Summary
Clients who attend treatment at Healthy Futures not only learn how to accept food but also how to have a healthy and productive relationship to food and lessen the power that food has held over them. There is an element of having to learn to trust themselves and others during this process, which for many clients initially can be a huge struggle. Luckily the staff creates a very safe atmosphere and clients can move through their treatment schedules at their own pace.
