havertown pennsylvaniaHarwood House Review

The Harwood House of Havertown, Pennsylvania is a residential transitional living facility that treats adult men and women for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Since 1975, Harwood House has incorporated 12-step philosophy and evidence-based practices into treatment through group and individual therapy in a supportive environment.

Accommodations and Food

The Harwood facility accommodates approximately 25 men and eight women at a time, all in a large, brick one-story building. The men and women’s quarters are separated into two wings of the building, each with gender-specific dorm-style bedrooms. Some of the rooms sleep four residents at a time while others fit up to eight beds. On the men’s side of the facility there are three full bathrooms with multiple stall showers, whereas the women’s side shares two with the same set-up. There are common areas on both sides of the facility that include a living room with TV, a kitchen and sitting areas. All meals are provided by the facility and are planned by a nutritionist to ensure each resident keeps a healthy diet during their stay.

Rules and Regulations

Harwood House is considered a step down facility designed to follow completion of residential treatment, with slightly more supervision, structure and required treatment than a sober living facility. As such, all clients are required to get a job, a sponsor and a home meeting location as soon as possible upon enrolling. There is a rotating calendar of morning and evening chores which includes keeping rooms and personal spaces tidy. Though residents do have plenty of free time, they are still expected to save money so they can reestablish their independence after leaving the facility.

The facility uses both the 12 steps and evidence based therapy throughout treatment. Typically, each client attends one individual therapy session per week as well as several group meetings. They are also expected to attend AA/NA meetings on their own at least five times per week and provide signed attendance sheets. During their time at the facility, men and women do not cross paths at any time.

Residents stay at the facility for an average of 90 days, though some stay as long as six months. For those in need of dual diagnosis support, medication management services are available in addition to the weekly schedule of counseling. There are groups that focus on relapse prevention, stress management, anger management, life and coping skills as well as assistance with obtaining employment. Clients work closely with personal counselors to set up goal plans.

Harwood has an on-site psychiatrist, four primary therapists and 14 residential employees including CADCs and CCDCs.

Extras

Harwood House provides family counseling services for family members of those treatment with both group and individual therapy available. There is an aftercare program for clients who are no longer living at the facility that meets once a week in a group. There are also HIV/AIDS education and services provided at the facility.

In Summary

Harwood House clients have already completed an intensive residential program and are looking for another stop before independent living. Those who stay at the facility are sure to get the help they need from Harwood’s qualified staff and from the program’s structured treatment options. In all, Harwood House is ideal for individuals seeking a combination of an evidence-based therapeutic model and 12-step programming, along with structure and community living.
