Hartford Behavioral Health (HBH) offers outpatient substance abuse and mental health counseling to adults and adolescents in Hartford County including the cities of Bridgeport and New Haven, Connecticut. Treatment and Staff
The first step in treatment is an assessment, facilitated by a licensed mental health counselor. The adult outpatient program serves those who are 18 and older, while the adolescent program serves clients who are between 13 and 17. From here, outpatient treatment is scheduled based on need and availability. Typically, clients attend group therapy at least once a week and individual therapy as often as needed.
Primary therapeutic modalities include CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and trauma therapy. Group topics include managing anxiety and depression and addiction studies. Dual diagnosis clients attend sessions specific to their diagnosis and are also screened by a psychiatrist for medication management. Those who need more intense counseling attend groups as often as four times a week. Adolescent substance abuse treatment is based on MDFT, which is designed to work with teenagers exhibiting substance abuse issues and other behavioral problems. MDFT helps the adolescent and parent or legal guardians address positive change. Adolescents attend groups focusing on self-identity, sexual experimentation and peer pressure. Clients attend groups twice a week, along with a weekly family therapy session.
HBH also encourages all of its clients to seek community support through the 12 steps, SMART Recovery and Life Ring.
The team at Hartford Behavioral Health consists of psychiatrists, Master’s-level therapists, LPNs, LCSWs, LADCs, physicians and Master’s-level graduate students serving as interns. Counseling sessions have clients sitting in a circle with a maximum capacity of 12, and all educational sessions are held in conference rooms.
Extras
The family program at HBH is geared towards its adolescent clients. Structural family therapy and strategic family therapy are both utilized, emphasizing problem solving, principles of change and intervention, homework assignments and family dynamics.
HBH also sponsors an underage drinking program as a preventative measure.
