Harlem Hospital Center offers an assortment of mental health and wellness services. Its behavioral health department in Harlem, New York City provides outpatient treatment to adults for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Services include individual and group therapy sessions along with medication management for those with a dual diagnosis. Treatment is individualized to suit each client’s needs, with various group therapy sessions offered on weekdays.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at HHC’s chemical dependency department begins with an initial assessment. The intake process helps staff develop treatment plans to best address each client’s needs. Those in need of dual diagnosis support can meet with a nurse practitioner for medication management services. Though the departments for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders are separate, groups are intertwined.
The facility typically offers four outpatient groups a day from Monday through Friday, though attendance can be increased if necessary—there are also clients who only attend two groups a week. Length of treatment also varies from client to client. Groups are held for an hour at a time with the earliest beginning at 9:30 am and the latest beginning at 1 pm. Groups utilize CBT and include stress management, PTSD, trauma, depression, recovery and empowerment, medication and health, relapse prevention and substance abuse education. As a supplement to group therapy, adults are also offered individual therapy sessions which are scheduled as needed.
Though clients are not required to take part in a 12-step program, regular attendance of meetings is still highly encouraged. Staff can provide information for community-based meetings upon request. Clients are required, however, to submit to weekly drug and alcohol testing which help monitor progress and ensure commitment to the program.
At Harlem Hospital Center, adults are offered outpatient substance abuse and mental health services. The facility’s treatment programs are highly personalized and structured around each client’s needs. A myriad of group options are available and clients can address specific issues with medication—also provided as a supplement to therapy. In all, Harlem Hospital Center is ideal for neighborhood residents in search of flexible and affordable outpatient treatment.
