Located in San Pedro, California, Harbor Area Substance Abuse Treatment Center is a locally owned and operated facility treating adolescents who struggle with alcohol and drug dependency. Treatment is done on an outpatient basis using individual and group therapy as well as incorporating the 12-step principles.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Harbor uses evidence-based therapies like CBT as well as group support, peer interaction and education. After an initial evaluation, clients receive an individualized plan. While detox and residential services are not available, clients are actively involved in customizing their treatment path.
Currently, the facility offers treatment for substance abuse through individual, group and family therapy sessions using a three-phase system. The first phase, known as the Primary Phase, lasts six weeks and requires attendance of 30 sessions. The second phase is Continued Care and lasts four months and includes 48 group and/or individual sessions. The final phase is Aftercare which typically lasts six months and includes 24 sessions.
Groups are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 pm. Topics include coping skills, family dynamics, step study and alcohol and drug education. Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings during their free time with referrals to local community AA/NA and CA meetings made frequently.
In addition to group work, clients receive support through hour-long individual therapy sessions with a Master’s-level therapists which are usually conducted on a weekly basis. Family therapy is available as well in the form of hour-long sessions which allow clients and their loved ones to work on issues like communication and healthy support for long-term sobriety. Alcohol and drug education is also a staple of the programming at Harbor.
The staff consists of Master’s level therapists and LADCs. Group sizes usually range from eight to 10 clients at a time.
Extras
From time to time, workshops on self esteem, anger management, grief and effective communication are also offered. Support for employment can be provided as well with resume writing, interviewing skills, skill assessments and development, job coaching, marketing skills, labor market information, job search assistance and job application assistance. Educational services include academic tutoring, homework assistance, life skills development, health promotion and violence prevention.
