HannahvilleHannahville Indian Community Behavioral Health Program Review

The Hannahville Indian Community provides a variety of culturally sensitive behavioral health services to Potawatomi Native Americans living in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Services include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders. The program is led by experienced professionals that utilize 12-step principles and teachings from The Red Road to Wellbriety, a recovery book written for Native Americans by Native Americans.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment begins with an assessment held to determine proper level of care. Those in need of detox, inpatient, or halfway house services are provided referrals to facilities in the community. Meanwhile, there is an on-site psychiatrist that offers medicament management to those in need of support for co-occurring disorders.

The intensive outpatient program for adults is an eight-week program that meets three days a week. Group therapy takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 10 am to noon. During groups, a facilitator leads educational discussions based on the 12-step principles and The Red Road to Wellbriety, where clients learn to combine the use of the Native American Medicine Wheel and the 12 steps to understand sobriety in a cultural way. Some groups take a therapy-based approach for discussions on such topics as the disease of addiction, dual diagnosis, and relapse prevention. Clients can schedule individual sessions as needed.

Staff members include a psychiatrist a mental health therapist and CADCs.

Extras

Individuals, couples and families are offered counseling sessions in an individual setting for a variety of behavioral health issues. Services are available to people of all ages—from adolescents to senior citizens.

Suicide prevention is also addressed through evidence-based psychotherapy sessions with a professional. There’s a suicide prevention hotline that can be reached at 1-800-273-TALK.

A Fitness Center for tribe members over the age of 18 is located at the Health and Human Service Building.

Child Care and Early Head Start/Head Start programs are available to tribal and non tribal children up to the age of five. The EHS/HS programs are held Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 3 pm. Children take part in cultural education classes, music and outdoor recreational activities.

Out of an effort to preserve customs, clients make quilts and other cultural creations in a group called Homemakers which takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 8 pm and is open to anyone interested in participating. There’s also a Potawatomi Heritage Center and a Cultural Committee that gets together to discuss the implementation of new cultural programs.

Education services are offered to adults, families and children through the Family Education and Children Program (FACE). FACE seeks to promote healthy relationships between parents and children through at-home or facility-based interactions such as interactive play time. Within the adult education services, clients are provided with computer literacy training, cultural and language classes and GED testing.

Project Visions offers vocational rehabilitation to residents that live on the reservation. Options are catered to those struggling with disabilities and in need of vocational counseling, skills training, physical aids and other job development resources.

The agency also has social services to make sure that Native American families are protected from abuse, neglect and exploitation. Services include child abuse investigation, foster care services, a healthy homes program and family preservation and reunification.

In addition to the services mentioned above, the quality of life for Native Americans and their descendants is managed through the Department of Planing and Evaluation, which runs an Environmental Protection Program. The program aims to preserve and manage environmental resources at the reservation.

In Summary

Native Americans and their descendants have access to a variety of culturally relevant services through Hannahville Indian Community with mental health treatment for people of all ages and substance abuse programs for adults. It’s a solid choice for Midwestern Native Americans seeking recovery and wanting to foster a sense of cultural community.
