Tamara Duarte is the owner of Get Centered Counseling, an outpatient treatment facility that caters to women who are struggling with body image and eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Located in Vancouver, Washington, Duarte specializes in helping her clients find a healthy and satisfying balance between food and their bodies, while also offering her expertise in mental health conditions like bipolar disorder, anxiety, grief and loss and trauma. She offers both individual and family counseling and works closely with her clients’ doctors or psychiatrists, to make sure they are getting the best treatment options possible.
Treatment and Staff
Duarte is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Oregon and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and has a private practice in Hazel Dell. She brings a unique perspective in that she struggled with an eating disorder herself for about 15 years, so she is able to offer insight from her own experience.
Duarte utilizes a variety of treatment modalities that range from evidence-based and traditional to more experiential. She’s also able to provide online sessions over Skype if necessary. Some of her approaches include CBT, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Family Systems. Depending on what a client is seeking help with, she is able to offer several different objective solutions. She doesn’t claim to be able to “cure” someone within the first hour that they meet, and makes sure her clients know that eating and mental health disorders take a while to address and over time changes start to take place. Additionally she has an array of resources she can offer, like books and guides, that help clients understand the science behind their issues, which also gives them clarity.
When working with the women who come to her due to their eating disorders, she aims to help them learn how to have a healthy relationship to their bodies and food through identifying triggers, and stopping the negative self talk by dispelling the feeling of shame that is accompanied with the disease. She makes sure to give her clients a safe space to explore where their eating disorder began and from there discover methods that work for them personally rather than a one size fits all treatment. Part of this is helping clients look at what the symptoms of their disease is and to observe when they happen, like times of stress or grief, and give them alternative ways to deal with those feelings as opposed to denying themselves of food or overeating.
Tamara Duarte is passionate about helping her clients rediscover their health and happiness through communication and a number of personalized treatment plans. She understands and is able to communicate how many factors go into an eating disorder, and how often they can be misdiagnosed or overlooked. She works to build her clients trust over time, and from there give them a number of effective and helpful ways to manage their symptoms while at the same time taking the shame and pressure off of them.
