Genesis Recovery San Diego Review
Genesis Recovery San Diego is non-profit, faith-based, 12 step drug and alcohol treatment program. Currently a men-only program (though there are plans to expand in the future), Genesis offers long term, highly structured residential treatment in a beautiful rural location about an hour northeast of the city and an outpatient component in an office setting. Programs also incorporate dual diagnosis support if necessary. Both those who are self-referred and men who have been court ordered to treatment can work with counselors to design a treatment plan that suits their needs and fulfills legal requirements.
Accommodations and Food
The Genesis house is a large ranch property with room for 24 men at a time. Clients share large dorm-style bedrooms that have bunk beds, basic furnishings and large shared bathrooms in the hallways. Cell phones and computers are not allowed but there is a house computer and phone that are available under supervision. Household chores are assigned to each resident. The expansive compound features a basketball court, fire pit, horse shoes and outdoor meeting area.
All meals at Genesis are nutritious and home-cooked with menus determined by clients and the residential managers. Residents eat together in a large, cafeteria-style dining room. Coffee is also readily available throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
The Genesis residential program is 90 days. Medical detox is not provided on-site, but those in need can be referred to a community partner and return to Genesis when they are medically stable. Because it is faith-based and incorporates the social model, treatment consists primarily of Bible study, worship, group therapy and activities, although individual counseling is available as needed. Counselors use a variety of treatment techniques including goal setting, CBT and relapse prevention. The program also integrates education about addiction and the 12 steps into treatment. Clients can attend up to five outside AA/NA meeting per week and the organization provides transportation to and from these outside meetings.
The outpatient program is designed for those either transitioning out of the residential program or who need treatment but can’t take time away from everyday activities such as work, school or family commitments. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level of care generally consists of three group sessions per week, but can be customized to meet the needs of each client. Depending upon participant needs, programs may also include recreation, 12-step attendance and goal setting.
The staff includes Master’s-level mental health therapists, CADCs and LCSWs as well as various other support staff. Everyone on the treatment team is Christian and some are in recovery.
