Located an hour northwest of Boston in Nashua, New Hampshire, Gatehouse Treatment specializes in the care of male clients struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders, in addition to individuals with co-occurring mental health conditions. Joint Commission-accredited, Gatehouse eschews the traditional “one size fits all” approach in favor of personalized treatment tailored to the specific needs of the individual client. The facility offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), outpatient services and sober living accommodations. With an integrative approach aimed at treating the entire person rather than merely a client’s symptoms, Gatehouse employs an array of therapeutic methods including individual and group therapy sessions, family therapy, medication management, relapse prevention, the 12-step recovery model and biofeedback to teach clients how to combat stress through relaxation techniques.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment begins with an initial assessment, that helps the Gatehouse team design the most effective individualized care plan. If necessary, clients immediately enter the detox program. Gatehouse works with outside detox facilities to offer a medically-assisted detox process that includes around-the-clock supervision and medication to curb the negative withdrawal symptoms. Upon completion of the detox process, clients typically transition into Gatehouse’s PHP program.
Gatehouse offers PHP, IOP and outpatient therapeutic services ideal for clients that cannot commit to residential treatment or for those individuals transitioning back into regular life from an inpatient program. With day and evening programs available, clients are able to receive intensive treatment while working, living at home or at the facility’s sober living housing. As mentioned before, the facility offers a multifaceted approach to care that integrates a number of therapies based on the client’s intake assessment. Clients engage in individual and group therapy, the 12-step recovery model and medication management as well as biofeedback methods to teach clients how to control normally involuntary body processes like muscle tension and heart rate. With the addition of the sober living environment, clients gain from an abundance of peer support and an emphasis on relapse prevention. While the duration of treatment varies depending on the client, the frequency is consistent. PHP entails 30 hours of therapy stretched across five days of therapy a week. IOP is three days a week and outpatient is two days a week.
Gatehouse employs a team comprised of mental health counselors, LCSWs, therapists, case managers, a physician and a nursing team. Medication management is available for clients in need of dual diagnosis support.
Gatehouse offers an alumni program as a supportive community for clients that have finished treatment. Monthly events include social activities, outings and vocational skills.
The facility recognizes family cooperation as an integral component to the success of a long-term sustainable recovery. To this end, Gatehouse offers a three-day, two-night family program for clients and their parents.
