Fresh Start Lodge Review
Fresh Start Lodge was founded in 2007 in Miami, Florida, by a LCSW who specializes in addiction. This 12-step-based sober living community offers help to those who are serious about their recovery from alcohol and drugs either come directly from a treatment program or the 12-step rooms with at least two weeks clean and sober.
Accommodations and Amenities
Fresh Start Lodge is comprised of four fully-furnished bungalows, housing four men each. The quaint, pastel-colored units include two bedrooms with twin beds and dressers, a bathroom, a large kitchen, a living room with decorative chairs, couch, coffee tables and lamps, a desk and a 42” flat-screen TV. Residents also have a common dining area that includes a dining room table, chairs and a coffee pot. The houses are enclosed in a fenced yard that has a manicured lawn, trees and a patio table. Amenities include an onsite laundry room, cable, central air conditioning and Wi-Fi Internet access.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries and a portion of the household supplies. Residents prepare their meals in their kitchen that includes a large refrigerator, dishwasher and stove. Smoking is permitted outside, at the patio table.
Rules and Regulations
Length of stay is typically between six months and a year, with a one-month minimum time commitment. Fresh Start Lodge conducts random drug and alcohol testing. The house has zero tolerance for relapsed clients and evicts those under the influence within an hour of their being tested.
Residents are required to attend an in-house AA meeting on Sunday nights at 7 pm, held at one of the bungalows. In addition, they must attend 90 meetings in 90 days, get a sponsor and work their steps. For their first 30 days, they must have meeting verification forms signed.
For the first three months, the curfew is at 11 pm, Sundays through Thursdays, and at 12:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Between three and six months, residents are allowed a midnight curfew. There is more leeway after six months, with the curfew being at one am Sundays through Thursdays, and at two am on Fridays and Saturdays. Daily chores include making the beds, cleaning the kitchen, washing dishes, mowing the lawn (when appropriate) and other basic housecleaning tasks.
Rent is typically paid on a weekly basis, but a 30-day out-of-pocket cost is $600, not including a $150 security deposit. The house has an in-house manager, in recovery, who provides supervision and support.

Fresh Start-Lodge is in walking distance to public transportation, as well as a plethora of 12-step meetings. The house is also in close proximity to a local shopping mall and a community college.
