Western Tidewater Community Services Board offers mental health and substance abuse counseling at Franklin Center in Franklin, Virginia. Located in Southampton County, the city of Franklin is a part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Franklin Center offers detox, outpatient services and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). This outpatient facility treats adults, adolescents and DUI/DWI clients using group therapy and the 12-step approach to recovery.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients have the option to either complete a comprehensive phone-screening or to attend an in-person assessment at Franklin Center. The intake coordinator sends screening results to the staff Medical Director who then determines each client’s individualized treatment plan.

After a three to four-day detox, clients are enrolled in either the 16-week IOP or basic outpatient program to continue treatment. For the first week of IOP, clients continue to meet daily with a staff physician who provides medication-assisted treatment (including Methadone) to ease the discomfort of withdrawal symptoms (Naltrexone and Suboxone are not prescribed). The physician also provides medication management for co-occurring disorders and monitors each client’s health throughout treatment.

The IOP requires clients to meet twice a week for group counseling and to attend two on-site AA/NA meetings per week. These 12-step groups are open to the public. All groups are led by staff Chemical Dependency Counselors. There is no individual counseling in either the IOP or basic outpatient, with the rare exception of cases of severe trauma which require emergency one-on-one therapy sessions.

The outpatient program lasts for 30 days with group sessions once a week. Staff administer urinalysis screenings for up to six months after clients have completed both the IOP and the basic outpatient program.

Extras

Franklin Center offers a specialized parenting education group for women that meets once a week for six months. Clients must be either the sole provider for their children or have dependents who are not in their custody.

Additionally, there is a program for DUI/DWI offenders. This track is in compliance with the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (VASAP), and fulfills requirements for court-mandated clients required to complete 24 weeks of an educational program.

In Summary

Franklin Center, an offshoot of The Western Tidewater Community Service Board, offers affordable care for individuals who require detox, basic outpatient services or IOP treatment. Those who desire one-on-one therapy will need to look elsewhere, as Franklin Center only offers group sessions. However, clients walk away with a sober community and fellowship to support their newly-found sobriety. With a sliding scale/pay what you can policy, even those on fixed incomes or who are unemployed are given the opportunity to recover.
