Five Acres
Five Acres is a Southern California based program for adolescents and their families that provides community based mental health, wellbeing and foster care/adoption placement services. Five Acres facilitates evidence-based therapy methods within individual and family therapy settings, medication support and management and case management services. Five Acres has been serving the community of Los Angeles for over 129 years, from humble beginnings as a downtown LA orphanage to now having cared for close to 8,700 kids and their families.
Treatment and Staff
Five Acres has three pillars of treatment as guidelines; safety, well being and permanency. Many of their young clients have experienced trauma or violence in their homes, have experienced bullying in school or have had limited stability throughout their lives. The programs address all of these challenges through a variety of community resources and services throughout the LA area.
Clients have psychological testing and treatment plans through a Master’s-level clinician and a treatment team who provides coordinated care and programming. Additional resources many include recreational activities for the clients and their families, clothing, housing assistance, childcare and transportation. There are also therapy options for adults through this program as well.
The trauma-informed CBT through Five Acres is geared toward clients who are between the ages of three and 18. There are also parenting classes that help guide family members in how to handle any emotional or behavioral problems down the road. Both the child and family receive education, relaxation and coping skills, trauma narrative training and aftercare maintenance support.
A program known as MAP (managing and adapting practices) is aimed at clients who are slightly older who are dealing with chronic depression, anxiety or trauma and provides researched based tools for behavior management and offers them tools for managing their own feelings and preserve self control.
Staff includes psychologists and psychiatrists as well as LCSWs, MFTs, vocational nursing staff and educators.
Extras
There are specialty services for clients who are deaf, birth to five and domestic violence support. Clients also have access to the Pasadena Mental Health Center, which provides several mental health programs, like individual and group counseling, that are free of charge of based on a sliding scale. Additionally, the space can be subleased by mental health professionals who are looking for a remote meeting space.

Five Acres supports children and wants to give them a stable and happy environment regardless of what their situation is. It facilitates affordable and complete care for both the young clients and their families. It also serves to provide the tools for improved communication and mental health, along with a number of wraparound treatment services. Five Acres is a valuable resource to the communities in and around Altadena and northeast Los Angeles.
