Fairhaven Treatment Center Outpatient Review

Located just east of Memphis in Cordova, Tennessee, Fairhaven Treatment Center offers residential and outpatient programming for women struggling with eating disorders. The outpatient tracks include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), both of which utilize evidence-based approaches in group and individual settings. Fairhaven Treatment Center was originally established in 2003 by Dr. Teri Haridister McCann, CEDS. After treating clients for eating disorders for many years and having to refer them to agencies far away from home, McCann decided to open a local facility with comprehensive programming options.

Treatment and Staff

Ideally, the PHP is for those who are not able to take time out of their lives to go to an inpatient facility for treatment, while the IOP is recommended for those who have been discharged from a residential program that still need regular, intensive support. The PHP is the most intensive program next to the residential treatment option. It entails up to seven days a week of full, eight hour treatment. The IOP requires up to five days a week of programming for up to five hours per day. Both of these tracks are individualized and include several group sessions a day and at least one individual session per week. Clients receive a personalized treatment plan upon admission, and have regular meetings with a staff psychiatrist who is able to provide medication management for dual diagnosis clients.

Clients have structured meal times that are supervised, followed by a process session. Programming focuses on past traumatic experiences, attachment issues, body image issues, overeating, binge eating, anorexia and bulimia. Therapeutic approaches include CBT, DBT, EMDR, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), mindfulness training and biofeedback.

Clients explore attachment issues and past experiences that may have lent themselves to the eating disorder, and also learn relapse prevention techniques. There is also an emphasis on family involvement and emotional awareness.

The staff includes mental health professionals and medical staff. There are physicians, nurses, Master’s-level therapists, LPCs, nutritionists, dieticians and chefs.

Extras

There are also several holistic and expressive modalities, like art and music therapy, trauma-informed yoga, breath therapy and mind-body therapy.

There are family days where clients family members can come to the facility and participate in counseling and educational sessions, along with weekend family counseling in either a group or individual setting. In addition, there are transitional housing options offered.

In Summary

The outpatient programming at Fairhaven Treatment Center is not a “less than” option to residential. In fact, most of the programming is as intensive as the inpatient track with the client being able to sleep in their own bed at night. The staff is caring and experienced, and clients come away with valuable transitional skills.
