Esther House is a womens’ transitional housing program for those who need assistance in the early stages of recovery after being homeless or incarcerated. Esther House is a faith-based program that offers counseling, education and life skills along with case management.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Esther House residence is situated in a former commercial business that operated as a hair salon. Now it accommodates up to eight women who sleep in dorm-style bedrooms with bunk beds. There is also a living room, kitchen and dining room, and an additional room that is designed to accommodate mothers with children. While the facility originally had a storefront feel, it is very homey and comfortable, inside. The entire facility is furnished through donations from individuals or the associated thrift shop.

Breakfast and dinner is provided by the facility.

Rules and Regulations

This program is specifically for women who are dedicated to their recovery and ready to get back on their feet. Esther house offers vocational training sessions  as well as educational opportunities.

Clients in this program may be encouraged to attend outpatient addiction treatment program when necessary. Esther House, which is directly related to the New Hope Shelter, works with local intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and standard outpatient facilities, and they assist in coordinating client placement.

To be accepted into the program clients have to have completed either an inpatient program or medical detox. Typically this is a 60 to 90 day track. Clients are encouraged to attend regular 12-step meetings within the community, or alternative support groups like SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery. Though this is a faith-based program, clients are not required to be of any particular faith.

There is always staff on site, including a house manager and a certified recovery specialist.

In Summary

Esther House not only provides the support and structure needed in the early days of recovery, but also requires that clients first priority be their sobriety. They need to be physically and mentally ready to do the work to stay sober regardless of what life throws their way. The establishment offers the women a number of resources, including addiction counseling, job training and placement assistance, and help finding permanent. Once the clients make a commitment to their recovery and improving their lives, this program really works for them.
