Eating Recovery Center Chicago Review
With locations all over the country, Eating Recovery Center’s Chicago facility offers several levels of care that includes residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Programming is designed for men and women with eating disorders and other co-occurring disorders. The inpatient track consists of a variety of evidence-based and holistic treatment approaches facilitated through group and individual therapy, psychoeducation, relapse prevention techniques, meal planning and support.
Accommodations and Food
Though clients are living in a hospital setting for their residential treatment, Eating Recovery Center makes the housing as comfortable and home-like as possible. The entire facility is bright and cheerful with modern decor and furnishings. There are both private and semi-private bedroom options and several common areas throughout with amenities. There is a living room space with TV, sitting areas with water features, office spaces and meeting rooms.
There is a staff chef who prepares the meals for clients from menus that were designed by a staff dietitian. There are also several group outings where clients go out to restaurants.
Treatment and Staff
The Chicago residential facility offers specialized treatments for clients with mood and anxiety disorders in conjunction with eating disorders. In efforts to offer more of this kind of treatment in the area, Eating Recovery Center joined forces with another behavioral health agency, Insight Behavioral Health Centers, to offer 24 hour care in addition to the programming offered at ERC. Additionally, the organization provides treatment specifically for higher weight clientele who struggle with compulsive overeating and binge eating disorders.
Treatment is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) along with other evidence-based approaches such as DBT, CBT and Family Systems Therapy. Clients have several daily group sessions and at least one individual session per week. Programming emphasizes the importance of self empowerment and learning coping skills to prevent relapse. Upon admission, clients have a clinical assessment to determine what level of care is needed, and from there a customized treatment plan is implemented.
Group sessions can be co-ed or gender-specific. For dual diagnosis clients also struggling with substance abuse there are medication management options provided.
One of the most important aspects of treatment at Eating Recovery Center is having clients view food as medicine. During every meal staff and clients dine together in the therapeutic dining areas and offer guidance and support during and after the meals. Sometimes during meal times clients play word games or trivia to take their mind off of eating, or are simply engaged in conversation throughout to lighten the mood.
The staff of Chicago’s Eating Recovery Center include a number of Master’s-level LPCs, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), MDs, nurses, and psychiatrists.
