Eating Disorder Associates Review

Located an hour south of Tampa in Sarasota, Florida, Eating Disorder Associates helps adult and adolescent clients struggling with eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Founded in 1990 by LMHC and eating disorder expert Isa Van Helden, Eating Disorder Associates provides comprehensive outpatient therapeutic services often only offered in residential facilities. The organization provides individualized treatment solutions rooted in a multi-faceted approach to care that integrates including individual, group and family therapy. The 12-step recovery model is not a component of the programming. With access to a psychiatrist, medication management is available for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

With a focus on the root causes of client’s issues, Eating Disorder Associates seeks to heal the “whole person” rather than treating symptoms. The facility offers a bio-psycho-social approach to care that begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Before beginning treatment, clients undergo an evaluation by a physician, nutrition and psychiatrist. This helps the staff determine the most effective individualized treatment solution tailored to the specific needs of the person.

Eating Disorder Associates provides a multi-pronged approach that includes numerous specialized support groups for anorexia, bulimia, overeating and family support. Clients engage in individual therapy once or twice a week as well as regular nutritional counseling and psychiatric supervision. Specialized groups for bulimia and anorexia help to develop the trust and patience necessary to heal. Clients and therapists use a practical goal-oriented approach to change. A large component of the facility’s programming is altering and eventually transcending negative habits and thoughts. Eating Disorder Associates believes that family support is a significant aspect to the success of a sustainable long-term recovery. To this end, clients participate in therapy groups with their family where communication, boundaries and appropriate roles are determined. Judgement is removed and a safe, supportive space remains. In addition, the facility offers specialized groups for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 struggling with anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. These groups target issues of perfectionism and trust as well as negative thinking.

Isa Van Helden is the founder of Eating Disorder Associates. She works with nutritionists, and a psychiatrist for when medication management is necessary for clients with co-occurring mental illnesses.
