Dr. Leslie A. Kaplan is a Los Angeles-based pediatrician specializing in adolescent and young adult medicine, with more than 15 years of experience serving clients with eating disorders. Dr. Kaplan brings a background in life coaching and mindfulness to her work with clients battling addiction and mental health challenges. Her private practice is located in the upscale Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas, and she lives in Encino with her husband and three teenage daughters.
History
Dr. Kaplan did her undergrad at UC San Diego, then got her medical degree from UCLA in 1995. She went on to a pediatric residency at Kaiser Permanente and an adolescent medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Since 2001, Dr. Kaplan has worked specifically with eating disorder clients from all over SoCal as the Co-Director of the Pepperdine University Eating Disorder Clinic at Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills. In 2011, she also began serving as the supervising physician for The Bella Vita eating disorder treatment programs in the LA area. In early 2017, she opened her private practice and began seeing clients on an outpatient basis in the Calabasas pediatrics suite.
Clientele
Dr. Kaplan sees a wide variety of clients, with an emphasis on the unique needs of young people. Depending on the venue, she provides coordinated care with clients’ psychiatrists and case managers. She maintains relationships with several outpatient and inpatient programs in southern California and provides referrals when a higher level of care is required.
Protocol
Dr. Kaplan’s clients receive an individualized treatment plan developed specifically for them—including therapy, meal plans, exercise plans, medication and nutritional supplements. Dr. Kaplan uses CBT, mindfulness techniques and psychodynamic processing, among other modalities, depending on the client’s needs and preferences. She also encourages clients to participate in peer support activities that enable them to build a community. Dr. Kaplan believes in the importance of a team approach to treatment and works closely with the clients other treating physicians, psychiatrists and case workers, as well as incorporating parents and other family members into the therapeutic process.
Treatment and Recommendations
Since she is still building her private practice, Dr. Kaplan’s private clients are often referred to Eating Disorder Clinic at Kaiser or one of The Bella Vita facilities if it is determined that more comprehensive care is needed. Each client is evaluated and given treatment recommendations geared to meet their specific needs for recovery as well life—with schedules developed around school, social and family obligations.
