Serving clients out of New York City, New York, Dr. Judith Brisman is a PhD-level Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS), an author and a psychologist who works one on one with clients seeking treatment for eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. Dr. Brisman is an established figure in her field and opened the first facility in the United States dedicated to treating bulimic clients, namely the Bulimia Treatment Associates (since renamed the Eating Disorder Resource Center). Since then, Dr. Brisman now offers individualized interpersonal psychoanalysis and psychotherapy services to clients in recovery from eating disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program with Dr. Brisman, all clients go through an initial consultation and assessment process to determine their needs and their treatment history. Because Dr. Brisman offers treatment exclusively on an outpatient basis, on-site detox and stabilization services are not available. Still, referrals are available upon request.
While most of Dr. Brisman’s clients attend individual therapy, her practice also offers group, family and couples therapy options as well whenever necessary. While the specifics of each care plan may vary, Dr. Brisman’s approach involves understanding why clients’ problematic eating behaviors are so hard to stop from an emotional perspective. Her practice also uses evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT, though these modalities may vary on a case-by-case basis. Although clients who are open to 12-step recovery may do so under the auspices of Dr. Brisman’s practice, participation in these programs is not always strictly required. While the program is non-medical, Dr. Brisman can provide referrals and guidance for those seeking more intensive support for co-occurring disorders.
In addition to treatment for eating disorders, Dr. Brisman also dedicates half of her practice to clients with other behavioral health issues like depression and anxiety. Beyond her private practice, Dr. Brisman also offers professional training courses and webinars for other clinicians who treat clients with eating disorders. More specific individual and group training sessions are also available. Finally, Dr. Brisman has also written Surviving an Eating Disorder: Strategies for Family and Friends, a guide providing general strategies and tips for helping loved ones and friends. She also gives public readings on a rotating basis.
Overall, Dr. Judith Brisman is a well-qualified expert in the field of eating disorders and related problem behaviors. All of her treatment plans are individualized and intimate, drawing on theories of interpersonal psychology as well as evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. Though the program may not be ideal for those in need of immediate hospitalization or stabilizing services, Dr. Judith Brisman remains a strong choice for individuals and families struggling with eating disorders.
