The Basics
Donald J. McHenry provides interventions, recovery consulting and case management services through his company Intervention and Recovery where he works alongside interventionist Robert J. Herzog. McHenry is a Board Registered Interventionist Level II (BRI-II) and a Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor (CCDC). He received his addiction counseling training at The Caron Foundation.
In addition to the general population, McHenry works with professional organizations as well, treating individuals with substance abuse issues and preventing addiction in the workplace. He has provided services to the Erie County Bar Foundation, New York State Lawyers Assistance Trust, New York State Dental Association and New York State Medical Society. He is now headquartered in The Villages, a fast-growing retirement community in Central Florida.
The Background
McHenry has been working in the recovery field for over 20 years. He is a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists (AIS) and past Board President of Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services.
The Approach
McHenry uses Family Systems Therapy in his interventions and pre-and-post intervention family coaching. He works closely with clients and families to help them choose an effective detox and treatment facility. Following the intervention, case management services are also available which include helping the family find appropriate support groups and 12-step meetings.
McHenry and Herzog are also known for their effectiveness in conducting employee interventions in the workplace. Additionally, they consult with law enforcement to help find alternatives to incarceration for those whose substance use has landed them behind bars.
Post-Intervention and Summary
Once the client has completed treatment, McHenry helps develop an aftercare plan for continuing therapy and 12-step or other peer support meeting attendance. Additionally, families are provided co-dependency counseling and other family therapy resources.
