District 19 Substance Abuse Services Review

District 19 Substance Abuse Services is a network of outpatient substance abuse and alcohol recovery facilities sprinkled around eastern Virginia. D19 has a total of nine facilities in Emporia, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, Hopewell, and the counties of Dinwiddie, Greenville, Prince George, Surry and Sussex. The substance abuse and alcohol recovery program is available to anyone in the community, but the majority of cases are court mandated referrals.

Treatment and Staff

D19 offers three levels of treatment and specialty tracks. Group sizes are typically between 10 and 15. Detox is not available.

The first level of care is Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). In this therapy, clients are shown a positive lifestyle to help them to eliminate their desire for drinking and/or using. The duration of Level I is 10 hours of therapy a week for five weeks.

Level II consists of Gorski Group Therapy two to three times per week, for 12 to 16 weeks. Gorski is a relapse prevention therapy designed to prevent clients from slipping back into their old habits and help them recognize triggers.

The third level offered is Intensive Outpatient (IOP), which clients  attend three times per week for a 24-week span. Group and individual therapy are included, covering topics such as relapse prevention, trauma, 12-step work and coping skills.

Project LINK is a specialty service for pregnant women or mothers with children under age three. Clients are required to participate in the program for at least three months. Pregnant women who are still using have first priority.

Faces of Change is a 20-week, four-phase IOP program for substance and alcohol abuse. Early recovery techniques, family education, relapse prevention and social support are incorporated in this program. Post-treatment employment and social skills are emphasized.

The Co-occurring Disorders program is for clients with dual diagnosis and focuses on the 12 steps in sync with case management and therapeutic management.

Upon completion of all programs, clients are offered aftercare recovery group meetings once weekly. D19 also offers referrals to inpatient facilities when necessary.

The staff consists of counselors, therapists, case managers and LCSWSs. Psychiatric mental health referrals are made to an outside facility on a case-to-case basis.

Extras

Additional services offered by D19 include crisis services for inpatients, psych and mental health management, and HIV case management.

In Summary

District 19 Substance Abuse Services offers excellent, low-cost or basically free programs for young mothers and pregnant women, as well as for all adults seeking recovery from drugs and alcohol.
