Desert Stream Living WatersDesert Stream Living Waters Review

Desert Stream Ministries was founded in 1980 by Andrew Comiskey. In response to his pastor’s call, Comiskey wanted to provide a facility for individuals seeking treatment for a variety of issues deemed unholy by the Christian church. Although the primary Desert Stream Ministry is headquartered in Missouri, other chapters can be found at locations throughout the country and the number of options varies from state to state. Desert Stream Living Waters is an outpatient program for adults who are 18 and over seeking help for a number of issues including substance abuse or addiction. All programming occurs in the setting of a local church.

Treatment and Staff

The Living Waters program is 20 weeks and designed for men and women of the Christian faith, although all are welcome. It implements worship, prayer, small groups and Biblical teachings in treatment. Clients meet twice a week and each meeting includes worship through placing attention on God rather than problems, Bible study, work in the Living Waters guidebook and prayer in both large and small groups.

The Living Waters program is wholly faith-based, aiming to use Christian teachings and faith in God to treat addiction and various other issues. The program itself is not 12-step based, but staff consider the group therapy facilitated by Living Waters to be a valuable supplement to AA/NA recovery principles. As such, outside attendance at 12-step meetings is strongly encouraged.

This network of treatment programs is not equipped to treat dual diagnosis clients so those struggling with diagnosed or suspected co-occurring disorders might be better served at a more medically-based facility. The staff consists of pastors. There are designated spiritual advisors at each location and eight full-time staff members spread throughout the United States.

Extras

In addition to treatment for addiction, Living Waters offers help and treatment for a variety of other problems those in the Christian faith may want help with, such as marital issues, co-dependency, pornography struggles, sexual addiction, anger, masturbation, unwanted same-sex attraction or gender identity issues.

In Summary

The Living Waters program at Desert Stream Ministries is a niche Christian program that implements a specialized curriculum based on biblical teachings as a way to heal. This program is not for everyone—and won’t be a good fit for gay people, those struggling with co-ocurring disorders or individuals seeking evidence-based substance abuse treatment. Living Waters does not create individualized treatment plans, but instead implements the Bible and the Living Waters Guidebook as a means to healing for all issues, including addiction.
