Treatment and Staff

Since this program only offers outpatient services, no meals are provided; still, clients are welcome to bring snacks from home.
The facility offers three programs, each with its own focus. Their primary drug and alcohol rehabilitation track is called the Oasis program, whereas the Mesquite program is for those seeking help for eating disorders. Finally, those who want help with their unhealthy sexual relationships or codependency should enroll in the Grace program, which offers gender-specific therapy. All the above serve between 15 and 30 clients at a time, and each runs for a total of eight weeks. After receiving a psychiatric evaluation prior to admission, clients spend three hours a day in therapy.
Though the main focus of each program is group therapy, clients still receive five individual counseling sessions over the course of their eight weeks. Group topics vary by treatment track, but can include relapse prevention, proper nutrition, emotional processing, trauma counseling, coping with grief and recognizing codependency. Clients are required to attend at least eight 12-step meetings throughout treatment. On-site AA and NA meetings are held on the weekends, but attendees can also participate in off-site meetings if they wish.
The staff includes a psychiatrist, a nurse, counselors and therapists.
Extras
For an outpatient-only facility, Desert Star offers a variety of specialty services and treatments including group acupuncture, psychodrama, creative arts and spiritual direction. All of these are available for no additional fee.
Families also have a chance to participate in their loved ones’ recovery through family workshops, where they can sit in on group therapy and learn more about the disease of addiction. For those in relationships, Desert Star also offers a couples workshop.
