Comprehend Inc. Review
Serving Kentucky’s Mason, Bracken, Robertson, Lewis and Fleming counties since the late 1960s, Comprehend Inc. runs over 50 separate programs and has 16 locations. Services range from residential mental health treatment to outpatient substance abuse treatment to a foster grandparents program for local school children. There are six substance abuse-specific program tracks: standard outpatient care, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) including a specialized track for pregnant women, two programs held in local detention centers, a court-mandated DUI program and drug court services.
Treatment and Staff
According to CEO Pamela Vaught, Comprehend is a “comprehensive behavioral health provider” that delivers individual, family, and group therapy to addicts at the standard and intensive outpatient level. Comprehend’s clinicians provide a variety of evidence-based substance abuse treatment in the belief that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to recovery. An initial assessment determines which program would best serve each client.
Addicts who seek treatment through Comprehend may either participate in group or individual therapy or a combination of the two, according to their needs. Clients determine with a counselor the appropriate length and level of care. Those with more severe addiction issues may benefit from one of Comprehend’s two IOP programs, whereas standard outpatient care may be recommended to those with less advanced substance abuse problems.
Operating from an office in Macon, Comprehend’s IOP involves individual therapy, group therapy and psycho-educational sessions. Like all IOPs, the schedule is demanding—clients must attend at least three group sessions per week, with each session lasting between two and three hours. Comprehend’s IOP for pregnant women requires the same commitment.
All of Comprehend’s clinicians are Master’s level or higher. Most are independently licensed in Kentucky as well or are working toward licensure under supervision. Comprehend employs PhD psychologists, LCSWs, LPCCs and CADCs, in addition to CSWs and LPCAs. There are consulting medical doctors on staff—medically supervised detox is not offered but Comprehend can prescribe medication and monitor medication-related issues. According to Vaught, “Comprehend is a co-occurring capable facility. We have trained therapists who work with both substance abuse and mental health issues.”

Comprehend accepts private insurance, Medicaid and Medicare, and offers sliding scale payment based on ability to pay.
Its many non-substance abuse related programs include case management, job training and residential treatment for people with intellectual disabilities, respite services for the families of the developmentally disabled, a batterer intervention program, and various behavioral healthcare programs for children and adolescents.

Comprehend Inc.’s holistic approach to recovery and expansive resources make it a worthy choice for men and women at all stages of recovery. Its support for those with co-occurring disorders may make it a great choice for people in that population as well.
