Charleston Sober Living Review

Located in its namesake, the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, Charleston Sober Living is an upscale sober living facility for adults males in the beginning stages of recovery. Fostering a strong foundation and a stable community, Charleston Sober Living is open to individuals in recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders, as well as behavioral addictions such as sex or gambling. It’s a home-like atmosphere ideal for clients transitioning from treatment to their everyday life, in addition to individuals that require more structure but cannot commit to a residential program.

Accommodations and Amenities

Charleston Sober Living is one of the few sober houses to provide individualized care tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual resident. In addition to upscale transitional accommodations, the facility also offers sober coaching and vocational counseling, as well as help finding a new place to live. Residents engage in individual and group counseling, 12-step meetings and relapse prevention classes. The community is very social, with plenty of recreational sober activities.

With only eight beds, residents enjoy a tight-knit community. Most clients share a bedroom, though private rooms are available for an extra fee. Currently, residents are responsible for preparing and cooking their own meals, but the facility is looking into a full-time chef. Charleston Sober Living also provides memberships to a local gym and yoga studio.

Rules and Restrictions

Charleston Sober Living expects residents to take responsibility for their recovery. As such, the facility has rules in place to promote accountability and community. Residents must keep the house clean, do the laundry and prepare and cook meals. Individuals are responsible for participating in weekly house meetings to discuss both house issues as well as the personal challenges of early recovery.

In addition, the facility performs random alcohol and substance testing. Violent or sexually aggressive behavior is not tolerated. In order to stay in the home, residents must either be working, attending school or looking for work. With the understanding that recovery is different for everyone, there is no minimum or maximum length of stay at Charleston. While most stays are at least 90 days, residents are welcome to stay for as little or long as they need.

Extras

While Charleston Sober Living does not offer medication management, it can provide clients with referrals for psychologists, therapists, physicians and psychiatrists.

In Summary

Charleston Sober Living is unique in that clients receive individualized care, from counseling sessions to sober coaches and vocational assistance. In addition, the facility can make referrals to physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists. The curriculum at Charleston is top notch for a sober living home, and any client seeking transitional housing would be hard-pressed to find a better place.
