Center for Discovery, founded in 1997, is a nationwide behavioral health organization with programming for clients struggling with eating disorders and related co-occurring disorders. The organization has facilities in California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon. Though services vary by location, treatment is available to men, women and adolescents. Among its California centers, Center for Discovery Rancho Palos Verdes provides residential treatment for adult women.
Accommodations and Food
The facility has a total of six beds available in a residential neighborhood. Women stay in bedrooms shared between two residents. Each room comes with two twin beds with comforters, along with end tables, large dressers, carpeting and shared closet space. The home also has shared living areas with couches, therapy rooms, a well-appointed dining room and a spacious kitchen.
An on-site staff of chefs and nutritionists provide residents three meals a day plus snacks during the beginning of the program, all with custom meal plans. As one would expect, the heart of the program is the focus on healthy eating habits, accomplished through nutritional counseling and cooking classes in addition to groups on body positivity, shame resilience, trigger identification and relapse prevention. Trauma-informed care is provided as well, including EMDR as necessary. Support for a range of co-occurring disorders is also offered with medication management included. While 12-step participation is not a part of the curriculum, those who complete the program can get referrals to outside peer support meetings upon request.
The staff at Center for Recovery La Jolla consists of Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), LMFTs, LCSWs, dietitians, a psychiatrist, a physician and additional Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
In addition to the clinical approaches, the curriculum also includes a range of holistic options including art therapy, Somatic Experiencing, gym time, Zumba classes, yoga, nature hikes and mindfulness training. The facility also offers equine therapy periodically.
As mentioned, Center for Discovery also provides a number outpatient options throughout the country in both Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) intensities. Those who complete primary care can step down the intensity of their care plans to outpatient programming as a form of aftercare as well. Finally, Center for Discovery has its own mobile app, which alums can use to track their meals, record feelings and look up nutritional information.
