Founded in 1997, Center for Discovery is a nationwide organization that provides residential and outpatient treatment programs for eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. The company is Joint Commission-accredited and provides treatment for men, women, adults and adolescents. In particular, Center for Discovery McLean in the Washington DC suburb of McLean, Virginia offers residential treatment for adult women.
Accommodations and Food
The McLean house is a modest, country-style home in a secluded wooded area with a total of eight beds for residents. Each bedroom comes with two full beds, end tables with lamps, dressers, carpeted floors and shared closet space. The remainder of the home includes well-appointed rooms including spacious common areas with cable TV and WiFi, comfortable therapy rooms, a dining room and an expansive kitchen.
Though the facility has on-staff chefs and nutritionists who prepare three meals a day for residents, clients do take more of a hand in food preparation as they progress through therapy.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their treatment plans. Though on-site detox services for substance abuse are not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby facilities. While each plan may vary somewhat, all programs feature individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Exposure Prevention Therapy (ERP).
Treatment plans can also include trauma-informed care practices like EMDR. Group sessions cover a range of topics aimed at helping clients develop healthier relationships with food and eating—these include trigger identification, healthy body image, shame resiliency and relapse prevention. To help teach healthy eating habits, participants also go through nutritional counseling and cooking classes. Dual diagnosis support is also available including medication management. While 12-step participation is not required, those who complete the program can get referrals to nearby peer support groups as necessary.
The staff at Center for Discovery McLean consists of Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), dietitians, LMFTs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Other services include holistic approaches such as Somatic Experiencing, art therapy, yoga, Zumba classes, nature hikes and mindfulness training. The organization also has its own mobile app to help clients track their meals, set food goals and learn dietary information.
Those who complete primary care can also attend outpatient therapy at one of the nearby locations as an aftercare option. Center for Discovery also runs similar programs in California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon.
Overall, Center for Discovery McLean provides all-encompassing treatment plans for adult female clients struggling with eating disorders. Programs include evidence-based treatment, holistic care, nutritional counseling and support for co-occurring disorders. While the cost of treatment may vary depending on insurance, Center for Discovery McLean is a good option for women in the DC metro area.
