Center for Children’s Behavioral Health Review

Based out of the Paterson, New Jersey suburb of Fairfield, Center for Children’s Behavioral Health is, as its name suggests, a facility providing a range of behavioral health care services to children and adolescents struggling with mental illness. All programs are designed to help clients stabilize and to reintegrate as productive members of society. The clinic is outpatient-based, with both Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) available.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment to help staff members determine their needs. Because the organization is focused primarily on treating mental illness rather than addiction, on-site detox services are not available. Still, those in need can get referrals as necessary. Once stabilized, clients attend either PHP or IOP—the former is similar to the intensity of a residential program meeting from 8:45 am to 2:45 pm daily, whereas the latter meets from 3 to 6 pm up to five days a week. Clients are also split into three tiered age groups of five to eight, eight to 10 and 11 to 13 years old.

In both cases, treatment includes individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT, though therapy specifics may vary by clinician. Additional holistic approaches are also used including art therapy, play therapy and mindfulness training. Groups cover a range of topics including trauma-informed care, psychoeducation, anger management, life skills and emotional processing. Dual diagnosis support including medication management is also provided. While participation in 12-step affiliated programs is not required, it may be encouraged in some cases whenever applicable.

The staff at the Center for Children’s Behavioral Health consists of RNs, psychologists, LCSWs, LPCs, LMFTs, psychiatrists and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Flexible case management services are also included with treatment as are standalone psychological assessments. The facility also provides multicultural counseling and support for Spanish, Latino and Hispanic clients. Finally, those who complete a primary care plan can also work with the staff to develop stepped down aftercare plans as well.

In Summary

In all, the Center for Children’s Behavioral Health provides comprehensive counseling services for children and younger teens with behavioral issues and mental health problems. Treatment is evidence-based and includes holistic supplements as well as life skills classes to help participants reintegrate into daily life. For parents and families looking for an affordable mental health resource, the Center for Children’s Behavioral Health provides a number of options that are worth considering.
