Founded in 1997, Center for Discovery is a nationwide behavioral health organization providing both outpatient and residential treatment programs for clients struggling with eating disorders and dual diagnoses. Accommodations and Food
Located in a quiet, wooded neighborhood, the La Jolla facility is a sprawling home with a total of six beds in bedrooms shared between two clients each. Rooms come with two twin-sized beds, cozy comforters, end tables, broad windows, basic decorations and closet space. The house also has spacious living areas with couches in a circle and wall-mounted TVs. It also features therapy rooms, a well-appointed dining room and a modern kitchen with an island. Trauma-informed care including EMDR is also available, along with groups discussing healthy body image and shame resiliency. Other topics covered include trigger identification and relapse prevention. Support for co-occurring disorders including medication management is available as well. Though the program is not 12-step based, clients can get referrals to nearby peer support groups upon treatment completion.
The staff at Center for Discovery La Jolla consists of a physician, a psychiatrist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), dietitians, LMFTs and additional Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
In addition to the clinical approaches, holistic groups are also worked into the curriculum including Somatic Experiencing, art therapy, yoga, Zumba classes, nature hikes and mindfulness training.
Center for Discovery runs programs in other locations in California, in addition to programs in Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon (some of which facilitate equine therapy).
Residents who finish a primary care regimen can continue on to outpatient therapy as a stepped down aftercare option. Finally, the company also has its own mobile app that helps alums record their feelings, track their meals and learn the dietary information about their food.
