Founded in 1997, Center for Discovery is a nationwide behavioral health organization providing both outpatient and residential treatment programs for clients struggling with eating disorders and dual diagnoses. Though specific offerings vary by location, the company has programs for a wide range of clients including men, women, adults and adolescents. More specifically, Center for Discovery in La Jolla provides residential care for adolescent and adult women.
Accommodations and Food
Located in a quiet, wooded neighborhood, the La Jolla facility is a sprawling home with a total of six beds in bedrooms shared between two clients each. Rooms come with two twin-sized beds, cozy comforters, end tables, broad windows, basic decorations and closet space. The house also has spacious living areas with couches in a circle and wall-mounted TVs. It also features therapy rooms, a well-appointed dining room and a modern kitchen with an island. The backyard comes complete with an in-ground pool and jacuzzi as well as tennis courts surrounded by tall hedges.
In the beginning of treatment, residents work with staff members to design custom meal plans and are served three meals a day plus snacks with support for reasonable dietary restrictions. As they progress through the program, clients take more responsibility in the kitchen and help to cook and prepare their own meals.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, clients go through an initial screening and assessment to help the clinical team develop their individualized treatment plans. As the program caters more towards those with eating disorders, on-site detox for clients with substance abuse issues is not provided. All programs include individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and Exposure Prevention Therapy (ERP). Trauma-informed care including EMDR is also available, along with groups discussing healthy body image and shame resiliency. Other topics covered include trigger identification and relapse prevention. Support for co-occurring disorders including medication management is available as well. Though the program is not 12-step based, clients can get referrals to nearby peer support groups upon treatment completion.
The staff at Center for Discovery La Jolla consists of a physician, a psychiatrist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), dietitians, LMFTs and additional Master’s-level counselors.
Center for Discovery runs programs in other locations in California, in addition to programs in Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon (some of which facilitate equine therapy).
Residents who finish a primary care regimen can continue on to outpatient therapy as a stepped down aftercare option. Finally, the company also has its own mobile app that helps alums record their feelings, track their meals and learn the dietary information about their food.
Overall, Center for Discovery La Jolla provides an all-encompassing program for adolescent and adult women struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health problems. Treatment draws upon both evidence-based and holistic care methods, all provided by a professional staff with a range of accreditations. While the price of treatment may vary by the strength of each client’s insurance policy, Center for Discovery La Jolla remains a strong resource for women in the area.
