The Basics

Founded in 1997, Center for Discovery is a Joint Commission-accredited behavioral health organization with facilities throughout the United States. Though the services offered vary by location, the company specializes in treating eating disorders and co-occurring disorders, with options available for men, women and adolescents. Among the organization’s California facilities, Center for Discovery Fremont provides residential treatment for adult women.

Accommodations and Food

The Fremont location is a sprawling, suburban home with beds for up to six residents at a time. Bedrooms come complete with twin beds, comforters, dressers, end tables, basic decor and closet space. Each is shared between two clients. The rest of the house is equally well-appointed and includes common areas with plush couches and chairs, group therapy rooms, a dining room area and an expansive kitchen with marble countertops and an island.

While the residence has on-site chefs and dietitians to prepare three meals a day and snacks for all residents, clients gradually take more responsibility in the kitchen as they progress through the program.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the clinical team develop their individualized treatment plans. Because Center for Discovery focuses primarily on treating eating disorders, clients in need of detox for substance addiction must seek those services elsewhere before enrolling.

While plans may vary somewhat, each includes individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Exposure Prevention Therapy (ERP). Trauma-informed care also plays a prominent role in treatment, with EMDR available as necessary.

As to be expected, a major part of the program is dedicated to repairing clients’ relationship with food and eating. To that end, all residents also attend nutritional counseling and cooking classes, along with groups discussing body positivity and shame resilience. While treatment is not 12-step based, those who complete the program can get referrals to off-site peer support meetings. As mentioned, dual diagnosis support including medication management is available.

The staff at Center for Discovery Fremont consists of Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), a physician, a psychiatrist, LMFTs, dietitians, LPCs, RNs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Group sessions also utilize holistic modalities, including art therapy, Somatic Experiencing, yoga, gym time, Zumba classes, nature hikes and mindfulness training. Equine therapy is also sometimes included in treatment.

Throughout the country, Center for Discovery offers additional programs in California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, Texas and Oregon. Those who finish primary care can work with staff members to step down the intensity of their treatment as a form of aftercare, usually through one of the organization’s many outpatient options. Finally, the organization also has its own mobile app that alums may utilize to track their meals, record their feelings and view nutritional information.

In Summary

Overall, Center for Discovery Fremont is one of many subsidiary facilities owned and operated by Center for Discovery, each of which is more than well-equipped to treat clients with eating disorders. Programs include evidence-based care, nutritional counseling and holistic treatment, all provided by a diverse and highly-qualified staff. Though the cost of these programs varies depending on the strength of each client’s insurance, Center for Discovery Fremont remains worth considering for women in the area.

  1. I advise you stay away from this place. We had nightmares dealing with them on every level. Financially, they pulled a bait-and-switch. When we were forced to take our daughter out early due to insurance limitations, they behaved down right vindictive. They blocked our daughter from partaking in suggested out-patient programs, they blocked the prescription medications they set her up on… just a mess. And Ashley Acle, a resident MFT, was very unpleasant to deal with. I’m being kind to simply leave it at “beware.”
