The Basics
Serving the community of Portland, Oregon, Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare provides mental health and substance abuse treatment. Through a range of outpatient programs, Cascadia offers gender-specific and LGBTQ-focused treatment. With residential mental health programs also available, Cascadia is able to provide comprehensive dual diagnosis support for substance abuse clients.
Treatment and Staff
While exact treatment frequency and length is determined by individual treatment plans, programs typically last three to six months or longer. An initial assessment with a licensed counselor determines the exact length of treatment and the methods used.
Individual therapy is offered in weekly, half-hour sessions. Together with counselors, clients learn how to cope with past trauma and how to have effective relationships. Education about the effects of substance abuse is discussed and specific relapse prevention techniques are taught as well. Depression, anxiety and other co-occurring disorders are addressed as well and treated with medication management if needed.
Group therapy is offered at various times to suit most schedules. Gender- and culture-specific groups for African-American and LGBTQ communities are available. Topics include early recovery education, relapse prevention, anger management, pain management and healthy living in recovery. Seeking Safety groups for trauma survivors and specific groups for those with mental health disorders are also available.
Life skills training and development is provided as an integral component of treatment as well. Clients are encouraged to take advantage of these resources to aid in the eventual transition to independent living. Cascadia staff assists with budgeting, time management, interpersonal relations, household management, navigating community resources, job readiness skills, communication skills, stress reduction and sleep improvement.
The staff is composed predominantly of Master’s-level certified counselors.
Extras
As a behavioral healthcare facility, Cascadia provides urgent and emergency health services for low-income residents, housing and homelessness services and residential care for those with acute mental illness.
In Summary
In all, Cascadia Behavioral Health provides an excellent variety of basic outpatient services for minority groups as well as other individuals. With a special focus on life skills training, those who complete the program at Cascadia are better able to function and participate in their lives and the community at large. Clients in need of more comprehensive care may benefit from Cascadia’s residential track, but the outpatient track can serve as stand-alone treatment or as a step-down from inpatient.
