Los Angeles CaliforniaCasa Nuevo Vida Review

Founded about ten years ago in Los Angeles, California, Casa Nuevo Vida offers four gender-specific sober living homes for men and women in recovery from chemical dependency. Their mission is to provide life-affirming tools so that clients become strong, sober and self-sufficient. According to their website, 80% of their graduates have remained clean and sober.

Accommodations and Amenities

Casa Nuevo Vida accommodates between six and eight clients per location. Both single and double-occupancy rooms are available. Doubles are furnished with twin beds, end tables and closet space. A private white-walled room at the male-only Playa del Rey home features a full-sized bed with a earth-toned comforter and matching pillows. The room has large windows and a double glass door leading out to the patio.

Meals are included, and all dietary needs, including vegan, kosher and gluten-free are accommodated. A typical menu includes chili with meat and beans, harvest rice, French bread and potato salad. Other entrees include mushroom risotto, Italian chopped salad, BBQ ribs and chicken, mashed potatoes, corn bread and corn on the cob.

Amenities vary and might include daily trips to a gym, a personal trainer and sports massage (upon request), surf boards, recreation rooms, sunbathing lounges, meditation gardens, Plasma TVs and Wi-Fi (during designated times). At the Northvale male-only house, resident managers are available around the clock, while the Cheviot Hills home for women features a weekly yoga class.

Rules and Regulations

While a majority of clients have been in residential treatment, individuals who have recently undergone detox are also admitted, on a case-by-case basis. At Casa Nuevo Vida, clients usually attend an outpatient program, and primarily spend their days working on recovery.

Weekly requirements include attendance at daily recovery support meetings, participation at house meetings and involvement with group activities and gender-specific house discussions. Clients are encouraged to pursue 12 step, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery or any healthy recovery protocol of their choice. House meetings have guest speakers who share their experience, strength and hope. Group activities work on relapse prevention, family relationships and life skills. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

At Casa Nuevo Vida, clients who have completed 90 days of sobriety are rewarded with a one-week stay at a satellite house in Los Barriles, Mexico. All costs are paid for. Clients participate in many outdoor activities, and receive individualized recovery-oriented attention while in Mexico.

In Summary

This sober living facility emphasizes recovery, empowerment and a sense of adventure, both with seeking out appropriate recovery support groups and with interesting outdoor activities. For clients who really want to find their own path in recovery and who wouldn’t mind a nice trip to Mexico, this is the perfect spot.
