Fort Wayne IndianaCaring About People, Inc. Review

In 1987, Caring About People, Inc. began treating substance use disordered clients referred from the Fort Wayne, Indiana criminal justice system. In 1995 it expanded its programs to include comprehensive family counseling services.

In addition to basic counseling services, CAP provides three levels of outpatient care for adults and adolescents as well as a Relapse Intervention Prevention program. Treatment is evidence based and includes both individual and group therapy.

Treatment and Staff

There are three tracks to choose from for adult outpatient treatment at CAP, beginning with Level I, clients engage in addiction education classes and small group discussions.

Level II requires 40 hours of group therapy. Using CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Level II takes clients through the following work books: Twelve Step Facilitation Therapy Manual, Motivational Enhancement Therapy Manual, and the Cognitive-Behavioral Coping Skills Therapy Manual.

Level III, for highest-risk clients, requires 72 hours of group therapy. Clients must attend group therapy twice a week (usually over eighteen weeks) and individual therapy as determined by the client’s initial assessment counselor at intake. Clients in Level III also use Treating Alcohol Dependence: A Coping Skills Training Guide as a workbook in group therapy.

Additionally, Levels II and III require attendance at outside 12-step meetings, the frequency to be decided by their primary counselor. Clients are encouraged to bring family members to individual therapy sessions in order to help build their recovery support system.

Groups are small, often with a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-five, ensuring much individual attention. Clinicians are Master’s-level Social Workers (MSWs) and Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselors (LCACs) and are equipped to offer dual diagnosis support.

Extras

For aftercare, many clients arrange a series of one-on-one sessions with their primary counselor. CAP has extensive counseling services for the entire family, including Active Parenting—a series of parenting classes for all ages—and Parents on Board which helps parents learn how to foster their child’s academic success. It also offers Theft Deterrent classes, Father Engagement, an Anger Management program, and Beyond Trauma—a support program for women.

In Summary

Caring About People, Inc. is an established counseling center that treats the entire family system. Its evidence-based substance abuse programs have a structured, well-tested curriculum with steps that enable clients to re-frame their past experiences and take new responsibility for their choices and goals.
