Calo Young Adults Review
Located 75 miles west of Washington, DC in Winchester, Virginia, Calo Young Adults is a transitional living facility that offers treatment for young adults struggling with alcohol and/or drugs, or co-occurring disorders such as eating issues, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. Calo Young Adults also has resources for individuals with learning disorders, autism and gender dysphoria.
Founded in 2016, Calo Young Adults provides individualized treatment rooted in a bio-psycho-social approach to care. To this end, the facility employs an array of therapeutic services including individual and group therapy, psychoeducation, life skills, recreational therapy and innovative neurotherapies. In addition, clients are encouraged and guided into local college programs at Shenandoah University, as well as volunteer and employment opportunities.
Accommodations and Amenities
Calo believes that a safe and supportive environment and a strong community of peers are vital components to the success of a sustainable recovery. As such, it embodies “CASA,” which stands for “Commitment, Acceptance, Security and Attunement.” These disciplines serve as a foundation for all growth. Clients at Calo live in houses located in the “Old Town” district of Winchester, and can live in single or double-occupancy rooms. There is 24/7 supervision with professional staff present from 7:30 am to 10:30 pm every day. Also, residents are always accompanied by staff on outings like swimming, movie night or going to an amusement park. Each house subsists on one food allowance. Meal prep training is facilitated but the residents work together to cook. The homes are very close to the facilities where treatment sessions take place.
Rules and Regulations
Calo utilizes a “you-centric” approach to care. Clients undergo comprehensive health assessments before entering the program. This evaluation helps the Calo team design a personalized program tailored to the specific needs of the individual. In addition, the program offers a “real life” atmosphere where residents are paid based on their level of participation. The facility utilizes a multi-faceted approach that includes a host of therapies including canine therapy, individual therapy, daily group therapy, skills groups, recreational activities and psychoeducation. The team also implements more innovative practices sucha s neurotherapy, biofeedback and brain-mapping.
Clients at Calo are required to be involved in school, volunteering or employment, and the staff assists with finding the best opportunities in the area. Tutors can help clients obtain their GED or high school diploma, or individuals can be enrolled in the local Shenandoah University or Lord Fairfax Community College.
Without a physician on staff, Calo cannot offer medication management, though medication compliance is monitored.
Extras
Calo believes that parental and familial involvement in the recovery process is an integral component to its success. To this end, the facility offers weekly family therapy, regular family seminars and constant communication between staff and parents. In addition, families are taught practical treatment strategies to employ at home.
