Cactus Counseling Associates PLLC has been a Tucson Arizona institution for 15 years. Under new management since 2010, Cactus Counseling is a private ADHS/OBHL licensed facility which offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse and a variety of counseling services.
Treatment and Staff
The first step in treatment at Cactus Counseling is an evaluation done by a staff therapist who determines a plan based on clients’ needs and any potential court requirements. The length of program varies greatly based on these factors, lasting anywhere from 12 weeks to a year.
IOP is typically comprised of 15 weeks of group therapy sessions four times a week for a total of 60 sessions. Each session lasts 90 minutes. Clients in this program also have a chance to schedule individual therapy as well. The group sessions at Cactus Counseling Associates are generally kept small, with no more than six to 12 at a time. They use a variety of methods including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to address subjects like relapse prevention, anger management and trauma.
Cactus Counseling also offers several lower intensity outpatient programs, including a women’s only track comprised of 24 90-minute sessions, a corresponding men’s program and a relapse prevention track comprised of 12 90-minute groups. Additionally, many clients combine their substance abuse program with another of Cactus Counseling’s programs such as Domestic Violence Education groups. Those participating typically attend 26 90-minute substance abuse groups and 26 90-minute domestic violence groups. Similar programs are available for victims of domestic abuse as well. For those in need of court-mandated DUI classes, Cactus Counseling provides Level I and II care as well as what they term “Extreme DUI” courses for those fulfilling sentencing requirements.
The staff at Cactus Counseling is comprised of a mix of CSACs, LCSWs, LPCs and behavioral health technicians. There are dual diagnosis services offered in the form of group sessions focused on specific mental health issues, though there is no psychiatrist on staff or medication management provided. Given that there is no medical staff nor any residential services, Cactus Counseling does not offer a medical detox.

Cactus Counseling offers an aftercare program, which is essentially just a continuation of group therapy which meets less frequently.
In addition to substance abuse services, Cactus Counseling offers a series of behavioral health and community programs including a program for sex offenders, a prostitution diversion group, a parenting skills seminar and a 24-week scripture program with a substance abuse focus.
In Summary
With IOP and standard outpatient programs tailored to meet an individual client’s needs or a court requirement, Cactus Counseling Associates offers fairly comprehensive services. Though certain staples of recovery such as an introduction to the 12 steps, the availability of family program or visits with a medical team may be absent, clients do have the ability to individualize their programs by incorporating in other services. In all, Cactus Counseling Associates has a range of services for those in the area.
