Located 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the city of Pomona, BRIDGES, Inc is a non-profit 510c3 organization that specializes in the care of individuals with mental illnesses as well as those with co-occurring disorders. An acronym for Braswell Rehabilitation Institute for Development of Growth and Educational Services, BRIDGES facilitates individualized residential and outpatient treatment services for at-risk youth as well as adult clients and families. Founded by Audrey and Chuck Braswell in 1976, BRIDGES is a provider of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, and is supported by Medi-Cal and private donations. Since BRIDGES offers primarily evidence-based therapy and medication management, 12-step recovery is not a part of the programming.
Treatment and Staff
Upon beginning treatment at BRIDGES, clients undergo an assessment to help the staff determine a baseline to measure future progress as well as customized care plan to meet the client’s specific needs. Based off of the evaluation, clients are placed into one of three phases; orientation and safety, recovery and discharge planning. These treatment phases highlight treatment expectations and goals, and also serve to guide clients through the gradual recovery process. The length of treatment varies depending on the specific needs of the client, as individuals progress at their own pace and are continually provided opportunities at each level to improve wellbeing.
Clients that participate in outpatient care typically no longer require intensive residential treatment but still need continued support while getting acclimated to regular life. BRIDGES offers the TruStart community program for clients of all ages with mental illness and co-occurring disorders. The comprehensive treatment integrates an array of services including therapy, case management, medication management, prevention and crisis intervention. Therapy sessions include individual, group and family sessions that utilize evidence-based methods.
The BRIDGES team is comprised of MFTs, mental health workers, case managers, community volunteers and interns looking to learn about mental health while helping clients. Medication management is available for clients in need of dual diagnosis support.
BRIDGES also offers the Project Independence program that assists adults to maintain independent living.
