Behavioral Health Services of South GeorgiaBehavioral Health Services of South Georgia Review

Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia is based in Valdosta, Georgia, a small city of just over 54,000 residents. This public non-profit organization offers an outpatient substance abuse program, as well as many other mental health community oriented counseling services. The organization has 16 distinct locations offering substance abuse and behavioral health services in Berrien, Brooks, Cook, Lowndes, Tift and Turner Counties.

Treatment and Staff

The substance abuse outpatient program at Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia begins with an initial assessment where a plan for treatment is made. While many clients attend the program as part of a court mandate, there are some who attend voluntarily. Either way, all potential clients must attend this initial evaluation with some form of photo identification as well as proof of their financial standing to formulate a payment plan.

After this initial meeting, clients attend group therapy one to four times a week, depending on their needs. These groups meet during the day from 9 am to 2 pm and in the evenings from 5:30 to 8 pm. Sessions are led by LADCs and are generally CBT-based, with an emphasis on presentations and psychoeducational information, though each session varies based on the counselor and the group’s needs. Clients are introduced to the 12 steps as well and have access to individual therapy sessions, though typically no more than once a month. Family counseling sessions are also provided. This program can last anywhere between 12 and 52 weeks, depending on each client’s progress and court mandates. Random drug screens are also a mandatory part of the program.

The outpatient dual diagnosis program at Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia consists of up to three group sessions a week in the mornings from 10 am to noon. Individual sessions are also scheduled as needed in this track. In addition to the licensed counselors on staff, there is also a psychiatrist who meets with clients and provides medication management.

Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia does have a medical detox available at a crisis unit adjacent to the Valdosta headquarters. The unit functions in a hospital setting, with shared rooms for clients and a 24-hour nursing staff available. Clients attend group therapy during the detox process and have the option of staying in the crisis unit for up to three weeks. While the Valdosta location is central to most of these services, the Tift and Cook County locations also offer similar programs.

Extras

In addition to the above programs, Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia also offers a host of vital community services. HIV early intervention services are available, which includes testing, post-test counseling and referral services. There’s also Shelter Plus Care, a federally funded grant program that provides housing to those who are homeless and suffering from a mental health or substance abuse issues. The program also offers prevocational positions to aid with the transition into the general workforce, and even yoga classes at select locations.

In Summary

While Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia’s substance abuse outpatient program may be relatively simple, its dual diagnosis support and additional programs are factors that make it stand out. While those in need of a more intensive programming may need to look elsewhere, many clients in need of affordable outpatient substance abuse treatment should find Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia a worthwhile option.
