Be Nourished is the private practice of eating disorder specialist, Julie Westlin-Naigus. It is an outpatient treatment and wellness facility based in Portland, Oregon. A Master’s-level LPC, Westlin-Naigus uses a collaborative approach that examines the client’s concerns with body image, along with addressing any past traumas. Treatment includes yoga therapy, self care and wellness counseling, and individualized programming plans for changing the negative narrative that one usually experiences with an eating disorder. Be Nourished hosts workshops and retreats two times a year. In addition to being a therapist, Westlin-Naigus has been a yoga teacher for over a decade and has developed a way to incorporate her yoga training into her therapy.
Treatment and Staff
Be Nourished offers a number of community events and retreats that focus on women and men with eating disorders through something called the Body Trust. Body Trust is a concept that teaches clients how to reclaim their bodies and distance themselves from the harmful narrative that society has pushed on young people starting at around age 10 regarding the concept of “the ideal weight.” This approach encourages the clients to trust their own bodies and heal their relationship with food and weight, therefore taking the importance away from the need to be a certain size and allow themselves to use food as fuel and nourishment.
Westlin-Naigus emphasizes the Health at Every Size initiative, which encompasses compassionate self care, respect in body diversity, and critical awareness. The main goal is the assist people in finding healthy behaviors and identifying triggers in terms of establishing an eating disorder. She also employs mindfulness based methods, and “here and now” modalities. This can entail Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion-Focused Therapy, Gestalt Therapy and Somatic Therapy.
Her therapeutic yoga is called Yoga for Bigger Bodies, which is geared toward client who in the past have not felt comfortable in a traditional yoga studio. This is a gentle yoga that encourages the mind/body/spirit connection and helps people get in touch with their bodies in a non-judgemental environment.
Westlin-Naigus is a compassionate, caring and supportive therapist who uses a social justice approach to treat her clients with eating disorders. She uses unique approaches that focus on who the person is on the inside as opposed to what they may look like. The result is that clients learn to love themselves and take the power away from food and what they think their appearance should be because of what society pushes in terms of what beauty is. Westlin-Naigus not only helps her clients heal mentally, but gives them the freedom to live their best lives through self love and care.
