Located on West 97th Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Aurora Behavioral Health is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of male and female clients ages 16 and up struggling with eating disorders as well as those in need of dual diagnosis support. The New York City-based facility offers individualized outpatient care with an approach rooted in holistic and evidence-based therapies. Co-founded in 2013 by Marissa Sappho and Maria Sorbara Mora, Aurora is a yoga-based facility that provides a space of healing and empowerment to treat “the whole person.” Aurora also has a location Brooklyn and will soon be opening facilities in Long Island and Chicago.
Treatment and Staff
Aurora believes that the cause of eating disorders is multidimensional, including physiological, psychological, behavioral, social, familial and spiritual factors. To this end, the facility utilizes a holistic approach that integrates evidence-based therapies with yoga principles. Upon intake, clients undergo an assessment and work with staff to establish goals and customize their own customized treatment program. At the outpatient level of care, the facility provides clients with a rotating schedule of eating disorder groups, with each group comprised of between four and 10 clients.
Therapy approaches includes evidence-based methods like CBT and DBT as well as psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoeducation topics like body image, shame resilience and wellness dimensions. In addition, outpatient offers yoga therapy, nutrition counseling, meal support, acupuncture and medication management.
Aurora also provides the option of participating in one of the established structured treatment plans—either the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). These are available in the evenings and on weekends. The EMPOWER Eating Disorder track specializes in the treatment of binge-eating, overeating and compulsive eating, and the NOURISH Eating Disorder program treats clients with anorexia nervosa or bulimia.
The Aurora team is comprised of an on-site psychiatric team, counselors, LCSWs and registered dieticians.
