Ascend Healthcare Review
Situated in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains in the suburban neighborhood of Encino, California, Ascend Healthcare is a luxury facility that specializes in the treatment of teenagers struggling with substance use and eating disorders as well as a range of co-occurring disorders. It offers a full curriculum of treatment including detox, residential, Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP), sober living and aftercare. In addition, Ascend provides family therapy with an eye on healing “the whole system” in order to heal the individual. Programming is individualized to the client and integrates evidence-based therapies and psychoeducation as well as wellness activities.
Accommodations and Food
Ascend Healthcare offers a comfortable and serene therapy environment in an upscale home with plenty of amenities. The house is a equipped with a spacious floorplan, several common areas with flat screen TVs, therapy rooms, lounge areas and a beautiful backyard featuring a patio, rose garden, fire pit as well as a full gym and a basketball court. With only three double-occupancy bedrooms, the atmosphere is communal without sacrificing privacy. Clients have a roommate and bedrooms are equipped with two queen sized beds, nice furnishings, attached bathrooms and plenty of natural light.
Ascend offers an executive chef that prepares healthy and nutritious meals. The culinary team prepares menus using only whole foods; no processed foods or sugars. In addition, the chef also teaches cooking classes as part of the experiential program.
Treatment and Staff
Clients coming into the program undergo an assessment during admission. Intake staff including a psychiatrist performs an evaluation in order to develop the most effective individualized treatment plan. If deemed necessary, clients go into the detox process on-site. Ascend provides a medical detox that includes around-the-clock monitoring by a nursing team. When detox is completed most clients transition seamlessly into the residential program.
The length of residential varies depending on the specific needs of the client, with most individuals encouraged to stay between 45 and 90 days. Clients are kept busy in residential treatment, including two individual therapy sessions, one group session, one family session and one group family session per week. Therapy is facilitated by counselors that utilize evidence-based therapies like CBT and DBT as well as EMDR to treat past trauma as a component of addiction.
Ascend believes that family involvement is a major factor in the success of a sustainable long-term recovery. To this end, the facility provides a family program that includes twice monthly family therapy and disease addiction classes. Families also have the option of participating in a group family experience with the families of other clients. Staff sends daily progress updates and works with the family to create a continued support plan.
The Ascend team is comprised of licensed Master’s-level therapists, a physician, LCSWs, educators and specialty therapists. There is a psychiatrist available to provide medication management for those clients in need of dual diagnosis support.
Extras
Ascend offer experiential therapeutic activities including yoga, art therapy, psychodrama, equine therapy, surfing, music production, photography and fashion design.
