American Indian Health and Family ServicesAmerican Indian Health and Family Services Review

American Indian Health and Family Services (AIHFS) is a non-profit health facility in Detroit, Michigan that provides care to the Native American communities of Southeastern Michigan. Services include medical and behavioral health care as well as alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention programs. AIHFS combines contemporary Western medicine with traditional Native American healing and spiritual practices. Founded in 1978, the majority of AIHFS’s funding comes from Indian Health Services from the US Department of Health and Human Services. However, the facility still relies on grants and generous private donations to provide services to all clients regardless of their financial situation.

Treatment and Staff

AIHFS offers outpatient therapy for those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. Treatment begins with a 90-minute intake with a counselor where clients discuss their substance abuse history with a counselor, and how often they would like to seek counseling. They provide individual therapy generally once per week, though sessions can be more or less frequent depending on each client’s preference. The duration of outpatient care varies and depends on individual need. Likewise, clients are allowed to stay in counseling for as long as they need.

The facility encourages clients to attend 12-step meetings outside of i therapy, though it is not strictly required. As an alternative for those resistant to AA, AIHFS provides one Wellbriety meeting a week. It is a Native American version of the 12 steps that incorporates Native American cultural principles in the steps. These meetings consist of group therapy focusing on general well-being and sobriety, with sessions every Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 pm.

There are both male and female counselors at AIHFS. Counselors include Master’s-level LCSWs as well as interns who work at the facility on the way to obtaining their own licenses.

Extras

Treatment at AIHFS is open to those with or without medical insurance. Those without insurance must bring proof of income to qualify for a sliding fee scale. All American Indians documented as part of federally and state-recognized tribes are eligible for care, though no one who comes in seeking help is turned away.

In Summary

Ultimately, American Indian Health and Family services provides simple outpatient care consisting mostly of individual therapy. Above all else, AIHFS is a good fit for any Native American in Southeast Michigan or anyone without insurance in serious need of addiction treatment.
